dsh-read-url

URL reader plugin for DeepSeek Harness: fetch any URL — webpages (HTML), JSON APIs, RSS/Atom feeds — auto-detect encoding (UTF-16 BOM / GBK/GB2312 / UTF-8 / Big5 / Shift-JIS), extract the clean main content (auto-joining paginated articles), and return token-efficient compact text or structured Markdown.

Zero runtime dependencies (Node 20+ built-ins handle fetch/decode/extract), no API key, no server side — install and use.

Supported content

  • HTML technical documentation, forums, nested articles and custom elements, with visible code examples and metadata preserved.
  • Plain text, Markdown, CSV, JSON and vendor +json APIs.
  • RSS 1.0/2.0 and Atom, including namespace prefixes, relative article links and xml:base.
  • UTF-16 BOM text without a Content-Type header.

Continue at charsStart + charsReturned; the returned charsStart may exceed the requested offset when paragraph separators are skipped. Markdown tables convert at most the first 25 rows and report omitted rows.

Why

DSH agents can search (getting links and snippets) but lack the step of "reading a URL into clean body text". The official tool-web web_fetch does a whole-page turndown conversion (nav/ads/sidebars all preserved) with a default cap of 200,000 characters — a token black hole. This plugin returns only what the model actually needs: cleaned body + essential metadata, truncated by default.

Measured 2026-08-16 (local environment): with this plugin removed, the official web_fetch hitting https://www.baidu.com had its TLS handshake intercepted by a middlebox using program fingerprints (fell back to http to succeed), and Baidu returned a server-side degraded page (trending topics moved to JS loading, absent from static HTML). With dsh-read-url restored, https worked and trending topics were fully readable. Root cause: the request's UA and TLS characteristics decide whether sites/middleboxes treat you as a bot.

DSH architecture compliance

Implemented per official docs (docs/capability-seams.md, docs/cordis-primer.md, docs/tool-execution-pipeline.md):

  1. Web access via the ctx.web capability seam — use ctx.web.fetch({ url }, signal) and its decoded body.kind/content result for reads, redirects and crawl requests; fall back to direct retrieval when the service or provider is unavailable. Provider HTTP errors and policy decisions remain errors. The optional directFetchOrigins profile setting selects explicit direct retrieval for trusted origins;
  2. Reversible side effects — the session cache is registered under ctx.effect, auto-cleared on plugin unload (temporal composability);
  3. Cooperative tool-call timeout — ToolDefinition.timeoutMs declares the budget, execute(args, exec) forwards exec.signal to fetch; the timeout policy is enforced by the pipeline, never exposed to the model;
  4. Model-facing simplicity — render emits compact text (title: header + body); the model consumes it directly with no JSON parsing. Defaults are the most token-efficient; structured output is opt-in;
  5. Parallel tool calls — all four tools declare isConcurrencySafe (since v1.1.0): every piece of shared state (session cache, decoder cache, per-render isolated browser pages) is commutative-safe, so the agent loop may fan out several read_url calls into one parallel group — the wall-clock time of a multi-source reading task is that of the slowest site, not the sum.

1. Token economy — return only what the model needs

read_url on a portal returns cleaned body capped at maxChars (default 6,000) — not the raw page with nav/ads/footers. Repeat reads hit the 5-min cache ((cached)), so the agent never re-fetches:

Values are coerced and clamped to sane ranges at load — quoted numbers in YAML work, garbage falls back to defaults.

Explicit direct origins (v1.9.0)

directFetchOrigins defaults to []. For a trusted local reverse proxy (for example, a GitHub hostname mapped by your hosts file), explicitly list the origins in the plugin's profile configuration, then reload the plugin/profile:

Listed origins use direct fetch immediately, bypassing the host web provider and its SSRF checks. Add only origins you trust; this also permits their DNS/hosts mappings to local or private addresses. The option is not a tool argument. Unlisted initial URLs keep the existing provider selection and fallback behavior; a provider refusal does not enable this exception automatically.

Matching is exact after URL normalization: scheme, hostname and port must match; subdomains are separate. At most 32 entries of 2,048 characters each are accepted. Only an HTTP(S) origin with an optional trailing / is valid: credentials, paths, queries, fragments, wildcards and ambiguous syntax cause a configuration error. Unlike numeric options, invalid entries do not fall back to defaults.

Once a request selects explicit direct retrieval, every subsequent HTTP redirect, meta-refresh, pagination request and descendant crawl stays within the list. Redirects handled internally by the provider remain on the provider path. Direct HTTP requests follow at most 5 redirects per attempt and stop loops early. An outside target is stopped before requesting it; refresh/pagination blocked by this policy retain the readable static result with a hint. Explicit direct reads use neither the plugin's curl proxy race nor SPA rendering, preventing those mechanisms from widening the exception. When spaRender is enabled and read_url or read_url_links would otherwise render a script-only page, they return a static-reading hint. Cancellation, response-size limits and one bounded Retry-After retry still apply. All four tools share the policy; success and failure caches are isolated by the complete normalized list, including after changing or clearing it.

Controlled HTTP servers and provider fixtures cover default refusals, explicit routing, redirects, pagination, all four tools, cache isolation, cancellation, timeouts and response-size limits.

Token economy (core)

  1. Body text only by default — no redundant headings/keywords/images/word-count fields; take them via params only when needed;
  2. Paragraph-aligned truncation + offset continuation — 6,000 chars by default (~3,000 tokens), cut at paragraph boundaries to keep semantics (text mode separates paragraphs with \n\n, so the cut lands on a real boundary, not mid-sentence); output notes a single line (chars 6000/12990 — truncated, continue via offset); resume starts at the given offset, sliced from cache — no repetition of already-read text (measured 0+500 → 500+500, no overlap); offset past the end returns empty instead of repeating the head;
  3. URL fragment reading (v1.4.0) — url#section-anchor jumps straight to the target section of a long reference page: container anchors slice out exactly that block (depth-counted balanced extraction), heading anchors read from the heading onward; the cache key keeps the fragment so #a/#b never cross-pollute, and offset continues relative to the section start. Measured on python-docs #str.startswith: 235,393 → 111,587 chars (-52.6%), the default 6000-char window landing on the target method instead of the document head;
  4. Hidden-element and consent-banner stripping — bounded attribute parsing recognizes hidden, aria-hidden="true", display:none, visibility:hidden and visibility:collapse; balanced removal covers nested containers. Class names match word segments, preserving forum/download content and highlighted code; attributes accept quoted/unquoted values and whitespace around =;
  5. Three-way metadata fallback (v1.5.0) — the published-time merge chain runs article:/og: meta → JSON-LD → <time datetime> → generic date meta → byline, with recognized formats normalized to ISO; when an anti-bot shell leaves the body too thin, the full ld+json articleBody serves as a body fallback; markdown tables beyond 25 rows truncate with a …+N rows hint; zero-width characters (U+200B etc.) are stripped uniformly;
  6. text mode first — Markdown structure is opt-in;
  7. Compact text render — the model sees a title: header + body directly, no JSON parsing; siteName is omitted when identical to the hostname; every status hint is one short line (truncated / cached / rendered), no verbose paragraphs;
  8. Two-tier cache — successful results cached per URL for 5 minutes (repeat reads hit cache: fewer network calls and fewer model retries); so a broken URL never triggers a re-fetch loop;

Technical notes

  • Encoding: BOM-first detection (UTF-8 / UTF-16LE / UTF-16BE — byte-level evidence beats any declared charset), then HTTP Content-Type charset → HTML meta; built-in TextDecoder transcoding (Node 20+ full-icu, so declared Shift-JIS/EUC-JP/GBK/Big5 all decode), GB2312 normalized to GBK, auto-fallback to UTF-8 on mojibake;
  • Content dispatch: HTML, plain text/Markdown/CSV, JSON and vendor +json APIs, RSS 1.0/2.0 and Atom feeds. Feeds support namespace prefixes, relative links and xml:base; Atom prefers article links over self/enclosure links and preserves text constructs. JSON uses compact output with a 1500-character string cap. XML sitemaps return a clear unsupported-content error.
  • Extraction: prefers <article> (all articles joined on aggregation pages; an unrelated tiny article — e.g. a newsletter card — falls through to <main> when its text is under 200 chars and <main> exists) / <main> / role="main"; role="main" containers are closed via depth counting of balanced tags (nested divs no longer cut the block at the first </div> — measured: gnu.org used to lose 7/8 of its body this way); strips nav/footer/header/aside/form/iframe, ad-like containers, and hidden elements & consent banners (the hidden attribute, aria-hidden="true", styles containing display:none/visibility:hidden, and GDPR banners mounted under ids like onetrust/cookiebot/cybot/gdpr/consent/cookie-law; a [\s"'] attribute-separator guard keeps compound names such as data-hidden/data-id from false matches; unclosed hidden elements degrade safely to keeping the content), heuristic fallback to <body>; on the body path a text-density pass drops link-dominated segments (related posts, category sidebars, hot-article widgets) — pages with standard containers never reach it;
  • URL fragment anchoring (v1.4.0): url#section-anchor targets one section of a long document — container tags (section/div/dl/table…) take the depth-counted balanced block (nesting handled correctly, exactly that section), heading/inline anchors (<h2 id>/<dt id>/<a name>) read from the anchor to the end (a heading introduces the content after it); percent-encoded non-ASCII anchors are also tried in decoded form; a miss degrades to the full document. The cache key keeps the fragment (#a/ cached as separate entries); a hit skips the readability upgrade and auto-pagination (both override located semantics with whole-document semantics); text mode is (block-level boundaries → paragraph gaps, headings on their own lines — paragraph-aligned truncation actually lands on real boundaries and offset continuation cuts at paragraph seams; trailing permalink glyphs / are stripped from headings);

Historical snapshot (2026-08, before v1.8.0): 152-site sweep driven by multi-site.mjs (committed, re-runnable, 8-way concurrent): 115 OK / 17 expected boundaries (login-walls·captcha·short static pages) / 20 attributed network·anti-bot errors / 0 crashes (final round with all pre-release fixes in; network-class errors vary ±5 between runs, all environment-attributed). Sweep-driven pre-release fixes (each locked by unit tests): double-escaped RSS descriptions, headerless binary sniffing, JS-redirect shell rendering, role="main" container cut short by nested divs (gnu.org 165→800 chars), tiny <article> hijacking the main content (gitlab 71→800 chars), relaxed render-acceptance threshold.

v1.4.0 re-verification (2026-08-28, proxy environment): anchor read measured on python-docs stdtypes.html — #str.startswith takes the full 235,393 chars down to a 111,587-char located slice (-52.6%), with both text and markdown output starting exactly at the target method definition; 152-site sweep baseline unchanged.

Plus a 15-item DSH acceptance round (a real agent driving every read_url tool end-to-end): 12 items fully conformant, the 3 findings all closed — ① Cloudflare's "Just a moment..." interstitial carries MORE text than the real body (259 vs 135 chars) and was mistaken for a render improvement → challenge-marker detection + an extra 8s wait for the auto-redirect + interstitial results rejected; ② ruanyifeng.com ships ZERO author/date meta tags, the byline only exists in body text → byline fallback harvesting the body head (verified: author=阮一峰 published=2026年8月21日); ③ PDF rejection now attributes clearly: Unsupported content-type: application/pdf.

Released v1.8.0 validation snapshot

  • 276 zero-dependency assertions + 12 SPA assertions pass. node test.mjs covers provider contracts, cancellation/retry, extraction/metadata, RSS/Atom, Markdown, continuation, batching and crawl boundaries. node probe.mjs checks pathological tags, nesting, long whitespace and bounded scanning.
  • Local maintenance validation (2026-09-07): 102 OK / 27 THIN+EMPTY / 23 ERR / 0 THREW across 152 sites, with no noise among OK results; 53 adversarial probes pass. ERR results are network/anti-bot failures, invalid addresses or intentionally unsupported binary types. Known NOISE flags were checked against the previous code using identical inputs.
  • Real case: on a Xiaoheihe post, comment like-counts (up field) could not be attributed from flattened text — precise fields should come from the page's underlying data API (e.g. /bbs/app/link/tree JSON). This is a shared boundary of text extractors, not a defect.

v1.8.1 maintenance validation (2026-09-19)

  • 297 zero-dependency assertions + 15 real Chromium SPA assertions + 53 adversarial probes pass. test-lifecycle.mjs, included in test.mjs, uses a local browser fixture for cancellation, launch failures, concurrent cleanup and restart checks.
  • The 152-site run returned 104 OK / 23 THIN+EMPTY / 25 ERR / 0 THREW, with no noise among OK results. The three known NOISE sites have identical decoded content and extracted output against v1.8.0 using the same input. Network errors and intentionally unsupported types remain separate from extraction results.
  • SPA cancellation closes the active page; plugin disposal awaits browser shutdown. Valid success-cache entries take precedence over concurrent failures. Crawl filtering uses path boundaries. Charset and Markdown attributes use bounded parsing.
  • Fixed model input cost remains 1,159 description characters / 1,876 schema characters, within the 1,250 / 2,000 budgets.

v1.9.0 validation (2026-09-19)

  • 322 zero-dependency unit assertions, 15 real Chromium SPA assertions and 53 adversarial probes passed. The suite includes 22 direct-origin policy checks and 3 SPA restriction checks.
  • The 152-site sweep returned 105 OK / 23 THIN+EMPTY / 24 ERR / 0 THREW, with no noise in OK results.
  • Vue, React and Kugou's known NOISE cases matched v1.8.1 exactly using identical HTML and optional dependencies, in both text/Markdown and full/800-character outputs. Errors were network, anti-bot, invalid-address or expected content-type boundaries.
  • All four tools enforce the explicit origin policy, including redirect/crawl boundaries, cache isolation and visible static-reading hints. Model input remains 1,159 description characters / 1,876 schema characters, within the 1,250 / 2,000 budgets.

  • KV-cache friendly (DeepSeek cost tuning) — tool schema/description stay static text (no config values embedded), so changing config never invalidates the reusable prompt prefix and KV cache keeps hitting. DeepSeek's cache-hit tokens cost about 1/10 of misses — the more stable the prefix, the cheaper the run (same analysis as the official tool-web docs);
  • Batch shares the cache — read_url_batch reuses the same cache (repeat batches hit it directly) and caps each page at 3,000 chars (below the single-page 6,000) to bound total output;
  • Compact fixed cost — the four tool descriptions total 1,159 chars (audited by a budget assertion at 1,250 in tests, kept static for KV-cache); extended HTML-entity decoding (45 named entities) means leftovers like &mdash;/&hellip; never waste tokens or render as mojibake;

  • Pagination: auto-follows rel=next or a short next-page anchor (下一页 / next / › / » — conservative, no fuzzy guessing); same-host only, loop-guarded, repeated paragraphs across the seam de-duplicated; continuation pages take the fast static path (a paginated SPA chain would cost one full render per page);

  • Privacy: the plugin never uses the developer's network configuration — the proxy fallback only reads your own machine's proxy (env vars or Windows system proxy) at runtime. No telemetry, no analytics, no data collection: the only outbound action is fetching the URL you asked it to read;
  • Optional enhancement 1 (Firefox Reader Mode algorithm): run npm i @mozilla/readability happy-dom in the DSH profile directory to auto-enable @mozilla/readability (MPL-2.0, referenced unmodified) for higher-quality extraction; falls back to the built-in heuristic when not installed — the core stays zero-dependency;

When the extracted body is empty and the page is script-heavy (likely Vue/React client-rendered) or a JS-redirect shell (few scripts but an empty <body>), the plugin automatically renders it with headless Chromium before extracting (a rendered flag tells the model); the rendered text is accepted only when it meaningfully beats the static one (≥20 chars from an empty static extraction — short real content is no longer rejected); bot-challenge defense — Cloudflare-style interstitials ("Just a moment...") get an extra 8s poll for the auto-redirect, and if the page still looks like a challenge the rendered result is rejected and the static body kept (an interstitial can carry MORE text than the real body — measured 259 vs 135 chars — and must never be mistaken for an improvement); the interstitial DOM never feeds pagination/link extraction either; rendering waits for the DOM to stabilize (content stops growing) instead of networkidle — heartbeat-polling sites never idle, so this avoids 30s timeouts; when not installed it degrades with a clear install hint, never errors — the core stays zero-dependency;
  • Boundaries: login-walled pages are not readable; SPA pages need the Playwright enhancement; structured data (e.g. which like-count belongs to which comment) is out of text-extraction scope — this plugin flattens HTML into readable text, so exact field↔value associations are lost; for precise fields, intercept the page's actual data API (see "Real-world validation" below).
